A genuinely calming activity that needs one sheet of paper and produces data they can compare week to week.
What you need
paper
pencil
How to do it
Rule a sheet of paper into two columns: what I saw, and how many.
Sit at a window with a clear view of a garden, a tree or a street.
Watch for fifteen minutes, marking a tally for every bird.
Do not worry about naming them. Big brown one is a perfectly good entry.
Repeat at the same time next week and compare the totals.
Most activity lists ignore the things that actually decide it
Sustained quiet observation is a skill that almost nothing else in modern childhood practises. The tally chart turns waiting into data collection, which gives a restless child a reason to stay still.
Adapting by age
4 to 5 yearsTen minutes, and draw a small mark rather than writing.
10 to 12 yearsAdd a field guide and record species, weather and time of day.
Keep it safe
None needed.
Cleanup tip
Keep the charts together so the comparison is possible.
