How to use them

  1. Print page one on plain paper, or on thin card if you want them to last. Cut along the dashed lines.
  2. Lay the cards in a row, from Left out on the left to Loved on the right.
  3. When the prickly feeling arrives, let your child point to where they are right now. Then ask: “What would help you feel close?” There is no need to hurry them along the row.
  4. Print page two whenever they want to color a set of their own.

The nine feelings

The same path Capy walks in the book, from prickly fur to room for me. Pointing is easier than talking when a child is already upset.

  • Left out
  • Prickly fur
  • Jealous
  • Mad
  • Teary
  • Hopeful
  • Cozy
  • Proud
  • Loved

The book these cards came from

In Capy’s Special Five Minutes, baby Mini is new at home. When Mama stops storytime to feed the baby, Capy’s fur turns all prickly. Mama does not scold or give in. She stays close, names the feeling, and makes room on her other side, and every afternoon their special five minutes come back, just for Capy.
