A dim room and a torch is all you need. Naturally calming, which makes it a good pre-bedtime option.
What you need
a torch or phone light
a blank wall
How to do it
Dim the lights and shine a torch at a blank wall.
Make a simple shape first: a dog with your hand, or a bird.
Let them try, and let the shapes be unrecognisable at first.
Once they have two animals, tell a short story with them.
Finish with everyone lying down watching one slow, quiet story.
Most activity lists ignore the things that actually decide it
Low light lowers arousal, which is why this works when a child is overtired. Forming specific hand shapes is also genuine fine-motor practice, and the storytelling turns it into language work without feeling like it.
