How to use them

  1. Print page one on plain paper, or on thin card if you want them to last. Cut along the dashed lines.
  2. Lay the cards in a row, from Sad on the left to A little lighter on the right.
  3. When the heavy feeling arrives, let your child point to where they are right now. Then ask: “What might help a little?” There is no need to hurry them along the row.
  4. Print page two whenever they want to color a set of their own.

The nine feelings

The same path Capy walks in the book, from heavy paws to a little lighter. Pointing is easier than talking when a child is already sad.

  • Sad
  • Heavy paws

The book these cards came from

In Capy’s Heavy Paws, Capy’s preschool friend Pip the hedgehog is moving to a new forest, and Capy’s paws feel slow and heavy. Mama does not hurry the sadness away. She stays close, they make a goodbye picture for Pip, and Capy keeps Pip’s acorn to hold on the days he misses his friend.
