Capy’s Heavy Paws

$6.99

An illustrated story about the heavy feeling that comes when a friend goes away. Capy’s preschool friend Pip the hedgehog is moving to a new forest, and Capy’s paws feel slow and heavy. Mama does not hurry the sadness away: she stays close, they make a goodbye picture together, and Capy finds his paws can feel a little lighter, even while he still misses his friend.

26 pages, written for ages 3 to 7. Instant download in three editions, plus a free set of printable feelings cards.

What the story does

Sadness is a feeling about a goodbye. Capy lives with it for four days: the news in the clover patch, Pip’s last day at the woodland preschool, the empty spot where Pip used to play, and the picture he finally sends to Pip’s new forest. Nobody tells him to cheer up, and nobody promises him a new friend. Mama kneels down, names what he feels, says she feels sad too, and stays close: at the dinner table, on the garden bench, at the art table when Capy is ready to draw. Pip leaves him an acorn, something small to hold when the missing feels big.

That shape is deliberate. A child who has watched a character feel sad, say so, and be held has a picture to reach for the next time someone they love goes away, and a short phrase to go with it: My paws feel heavy. That’s okay.

Who it is for

Parents, carers and early-years teachers reading aloud to children roughly 3 to 7 years old, especially when a friend moves away, a classmate changes schools, or someone they love leaves for a while. The story is about an everyday goodbye, not a death, which makes it a gentle first book about sadness. Short sentences over full watercolor pages, a Let’s Talk page with four simple questions, and Capy’s Calm-Down Steps at the end.
